Life enhancing foods

Good mood food

Which foods can motivate us to change and boost our progress levels day to day?

It is important what we decide to consume. Foods with certain vitamins get our brains in action and enhance our motivation to get things done!

Dopamine helps to regulate the pleasure centre of the brain and can increase your motivation by sending “feel-good” signals to the brain. Vitamin B6 is fantastic for brain development and focus. Foods rich in vitamin B6 include foods such as salmon, tofu, turkey, liver, bananas, avocado, spinach, walnuts, sunflower seeds and hazelnuts.

We all know that fish is brain super food! A serving of one or two of these foods can keep our brains in gear and excited for what is ahead! Eating oily foods such as salmon, mackerel and anchovies and other sources of omega-3 fatty acids, such as chia seeds may preserve brain health and enhance thinking skills, a new scientific study suggests. Researchers found that people who had higher levels of omega-3 in their blood have better cognition into middle age and beyond than those with lower levels.

The study, published in the journal Neurology, examined almost 2,200 people in their 40s and 50s with an average age of 46. The team of experts examined the amount of omega-3 fatty acid in the blood. They found that people with higher levels of the fatty acid had “higher hippocampal volumes”, the hippocampus is part of the brain which plays a major role in learning and memory.

Higher levels of omega-3 was also linked to better thinking skills including the ability to understand complex concepts.

Commenting on the study, Dr Sara Imariso, head of research at Alzheimer’s Research UK said: "As the saying goes, 'You are what you eat’ and just like other parts of the body our brains can be affected by the way we live our lives, including our diet’. Start as you mean to go on and incorporate this into your diet from a young age.

Having a diet full of natural foods, with lots of fresh vegetables and fruit can help you feel more energetic. Look for fruit and vegetables in differing colours as these provide you with varied vitamins and minerals.

Include some snack foods that will fill you up for longer and will keep you feeling full until your next meal. Ryvita crackers with peanut butter, hard boiled eggs, avocado, a handful of chickpeas, a couple of pieces of dark chocolate, low fat yoghurt with fresh fruit over the top. These are all good fats that we need to integrate in our diets. They are often less processed and lower in sugar.

“Good food is the foundation of genuine happiness.”

Auguste Escoffier, French Chef

Eating less food that contains high levels of sugar or highly processed foods will aid your health and prevent you feeling sluggish. Try and cook using natural ingredients. This will not only boost your energy levels, this will also boost the antioxidants in your body, keeping you healthy and encourage anti-ageing which is also a big plus!

Adding more plant based foods to our diet is good for us and also for the environment.
